Bangkok, Thailand – Chevrolet Sales Thailand (Chevrolet) will launch the new flex-fuel version of the Cruze at the 34th Bangkok International Motor Show. One of the most successful models in the Chevrolet range, the new version is even more attractive with its latest aesthetic and performance updates, including its flex-fuel capability.
Launched in Thailand in November 2010, the Cruze has captured the hearts of over 20,000 customers in Thailand. Its contemporary design and outstanding driving dynamics made the Cruze an ideal pick for the young executive or family. The compact sedan led the brand with global sales of more than 755,000 in 2012. This made it the best-selling Chevrolet nameplate around the world with nearly 1.9 million units sold since its launch in 2009.
“The Cruze has been an impressive performer in the Thai market as well. Its superior driving dynamics and luxurious design have made the car one of the most attractive sedans in the market. E85 capability makes the Cruze a Flex-Fuel Vehicle, or FFV. It becomes a part of Chevrolet’s strategy to expand alternative fuel capabilities to all the vehicles in our range,” said Martin Apfel, President of General Motors Southeast Asia Operations.
“There are currently more than 100 E85 gas stations in Thailand, and more are expected in the future as consumers realize the benefits of this type of fuel. Ethanol is renewable, and it is ideal for a country that has to import its oil,” he added.
Fresh New Exterior and Interior
The updated Cruze takes aesthetic appeal to the next level, with a new front bumper that features stylishly designed fog-lamps, new headlight design with chrome bezels and new front grille that makes the Chevy bowtie stand out more prominently. The new rear bumper features a sporty bodyline that gives the rear more character. New rear lights complete the rear-end treatment. The updated Cruze also features new five-spoke alloy wheels that add a luxurious touch to the sedan’s overall appeal.
Inside, the updated Cruze LTZ version features the new ‘brown stone’ upholstery trim in addition to new grain and texture for the center stack that gives the occupants a greater sense of luxury. In variants with key-less entry and ignition, the engine start/stop button has been updated to a more ergonomic circular design.
E85 1.8L Gasoline Engine and next generation Transmission
The most prominent addition to the Cruze is the updated 1.8-liter E85-capable engine, making the latest Cruze an ‘FFV’ (Flex-Fuel Vehicle). This allows the Cruze to run on any form of gasoline, from pure gasoline to those with up to 85 percent ethanol. The 1.8-liter DOHC four-cylinder, 16-valve ECOTEC unit features MPI (Multi-point Injection) and Double CVC (Double Continuous Variable Cam Phasing), both of which work with the VIM (Variable Intake Manifold) to optimize intake and exhaust settings across all engine speed.
This improves performance, reduces waste and decreases impact on the environment. The engine is rated at 141 horsepower at 6,200 rpm – with a maximum 177 Nm of torque at 3,800 rpm.
The new Cruze also comes with a next-generation GF6 six-speed automatic transmission that provides more precise and smoother gear changes along with better throttle response. The Cruze also features a new engine management system with the flexibility to alter operational settings such as fuel-flow rate, ignition timing and spark advance, depending on whether pure gasoline, E10, E20 or E85 is used, hence the term Flex Fuel Vehicle. In addition to its flexibility, E85 vehicles also have different components designed to handle the different properties of E85 fuel.
Mr. Chanjoo Kim, General Director for Product Engineering at General Motors Southeast Asia Operations said, “The ability to run on E85 fuel means much lower running costs for the customer. Ethanol is also renewable which makes it a sustainable source of energy.”
Kim continued, “E85 is made from renewable plant materials and helps reduce both greenhouse gases and petroleum consumption. In terms of energy security, this energy can be produced within the country. It is renewable and sustainable, in addition to being environmentally friendly. If use becomes more widespread, it will reduce the country’s energy bills and dependence on crude oil and fossil-based fuels.”
The Cruze’s E85 capability is another step in Chevrolet’s continued strategy to expand alternative energy options for its customers. The Captiva SUV is the other Flex Fuel Vehicle in Chevrolet’s products range, which features an E85-capable 2.4-liter gasoline engine, while the recently-launched Sonic’s 1.4-liter gasoline engine is E20-capable.
Other engine options of the Cruze are the 2.0-litre diesel and the 1.6-litre petrol engine. The electronically-controlled 2.0 liter, four-cylinder, 16-valve common-rail turbo-diesel engine with VCDi, is rated to deliver 150hp and a class-leading 320 Nm of torque. The E20-capable 1.6 liter, four-cylinder, DOHC 16-valve gasoline engine delivers 109hp and 150 Nm of torque.
Advanced Equipment and Safety
Advanced technologies and equipment abound in the Cruze including a Passive Entry Passive Start (PEPS) function, remote keyless entry system and steering-mounted cruise and audio controls. For enhanced audio performance and connectivity, the console supports almost all auxiliary, USB and Bluetooth devices. The Cruze also features windshield wipers with automatic control and auto headlamp function.
The Chevrolet Cruze is not just about looks and go. It also comes with a myriad of active and passive safety features including front and side airbags, ABS (Anti-Lock Braking System) and EBD (Electronic Brake-Force Distribution), Electronic Stability Program (ESP), traction control and safety key immobilizer. Passive safety comes in the form of steel panels and side beams designed to resist high-energy impacts.
The Chevrolet Cruze will be available for test drives at the 34th Bangkok International Motor Show, which will be held from March 27 to April 7 this year. For more information about Chevrolet Cruze and activities at the event visit www.chevrolet.co.th or call 1734.
