(Bangkok) 28 March 2013 – Thailand is shaping up to be a major market for Glenfiddich, the world’s most awarded single malt Scotch whisky, as discerning Thais are enjoying the complex spirit which complements the multi-faceted aspects of Thai cuisine. The 126th year family-owned distillery, the world’s largest privately owned distiller, has seen increasing sales of their portfolio of whiskies in the market, as well as an increased number of individuals requesting for bespoke tasting sessions for friends or for corporate sessions.
Gaelic for ‘Valley of the Deer’, Glenfiddich is the world’s first distillery to create the single malt, now the province of whisky connoisseurs throughout the world and a liquid that is growing in popularity here in Thailand. Single malt whisky comes from only one distillery and contains 100% malt barley whereas a blend is made from more than one whisky and does not contain 100% malt barley. This is evident in the texture, fragrance and taste of the whisky, which is why single malt and Glenfiddich is so prized.
“Thailand is an important market for William Grant & Sons, and also a natural place for us to be due to the strong focus by Thais on quality and flavour,” said Marcus Low, Regional Marketing Services Manager of the company. “Each of our expressions comes with unique flavours that cater to a broad range of individuals. From the fresh and fruity pear notes of Glenfiddich 12 years, to the silky lingering sweetness of honey and warm spices of Glenfiddich 15 years, Glenfiddich is prized and growing in popularity here. We were one of the first single malt that was exported out of Scotland in 1963, and we are proud to be a forerunner in the Thai market.”
Part of William Grant & Sons, an independent family-owned distiller founded in 1886, Glenfiddich gets it remarkable flavours and complexity from the combination of fresh, clear waters, and the skill of its Malt Master, Brian Kinsman – only the 6th malt master in 126 years. With a recipe accumulated and passed down through five generations, the rich whisky making experience of its craftsmen ensures each whisky matures exquisitely well – balancing rich complexity with Glenfiddich’s unmistakable character.
“Part of the Malt Master’s job is to constantly monitor the maturation of casks to maintain quality and identify if something unusual or special is happening,” said Struan Grant Ralph, William Grant and Son’s ambassador for South East Asia. “This attention to detail and years of expertise behind it is what makes Glenfiddich so unique.”
He adds: “Each expression is special and contains different nuances and notes to appeals to different customers. For example, the Glenfiddich 12 Year Old has a distinctively fresh and fruity nose, with a long, smooth and mellow finish with key notes of fresh pear and subtle oak. The Glenfiddich 15 Year Old on the other hand is a celebration of complex notes of honey and raisins, full bodied and bursting with flavour. The Glenfiddich 18 Year Old, produced in small, individually numbered batches, brings to life an exceptionally smooth and remarkably deep single malt Scotch whisky, with rich notes of baked apple and cinnamon.”
Glenfiddich 12, 15 and 18 are available in select retail outlets in Thailand. Other expressions including the 21, 30 and 40 Year Old are also available at selected areas.
