Thai supreme court upholds 14-year jail term for British paedophile

By Deutsche Presse Agentur

Bangkok - Thailand's Supreme Court on Wednesday upheld a 14-year prison sentence for British national Maurice John Praill on charges of sexually abusing an 8-year-old boy eight years ago.
The ruling was read out to Praill, 77, at a court in Chonburi, 90 kilometres east of Bangkok.

Praiil was arrested in 2001 on charges of sexually abusing a minor at the beach community of Pattaya and sentenced to 14 years in prison.

however was allowed to live freely in Pattaya on bail for the past eight years as he appealed the case.

Since his 2001 arrest, at least six new child sexual abuse charges have been filed against Praill, Supreme Court officials said.

The initial sentence ordered by a lower court was upheld first by an appeals court and finally by the Supreme Court in Bangkok.

Wednesday's ruling was welcomed by ECPAT, or End Child Prostitution Child Pornography and Trafficking of Children for Sexual Purposes, a non-governmental organisation, but it also expressed worries.

"We are concerned that it often takes several offences and repeated arrests to ensure that a perpetrator is effectively prevented from harming more children," said Giorgio Berardi, ECPAT programme officer for combating child sex tourism.

hello everyone

I tell you this is a F.ckup how can they still let someone in the community go around doing this type of Action to children they should have put him on the first plane home and let the police their take care of him he is one sick F.ck.

Hi Y_S,

yes... totally agree Y_S. This guy and people like him are the ultimate scum of the earth. What I find absolutely unacceptable is that they have allowed this freak out on bail for 7-8 years now while additional charges were laid against him.

1 case is too many already because some child has been harmed... as finding about a 2nd incident, the guy should have been locked up immediately to await trial. How can they have allowed it upto 6 victims????

I'm pi ssed-off and ashamed at the same time...

This is what Thai justice is all about, a sick joke. A convicted paedophile, or murders for example can bail themselves out, but on the other hand, a guy who wrote a novel almost nobody read goes to jail.

This Brit should have been put to jail the day after the sentence, and the key should have thrown away. No wonder many countries in the world believe that Thailand is the paradise for paedophiles.

Thai courts, well done, once again, there is no justice like the Thai justice, and hey, fantastic promotion for tourism…

While I agree that what’s described initially in this topic is horrendous if not unusual, I fail somehow to see the political implications in this? Should this been posted under General news rather then political perhaps?

Am sorry Y_S, and have reread your answer several times, and still don’t see the relevance and furthermore thought it was difficult understand where you found the political substance.
Is it correct to assume you’re of the opinion that this has political relevance because?
A) Child abuse is a criminal offence committed by foreigners?
B) Punishments are too lenient towards this crime in the statues and politicians must change existent laws immediately?
C) That law enforcement in Thailand is somewhat lenient, where foreigners and other law offenders go free even if existent law is up to date?

Just to mention a few possible interpretations; but sorry Y_S I still cannot see any political relevance in this story based on what you have substantiated in your previous post (this goes to a) facts b)interpretation of facts c) That you claimed relevance but gave no reasons).

I think the politics of the situation is:

Why are people who have been found guilty and sentenced to imprisonment not jailed until such time as their Appeal has been upheld.

Or rather why does it appear to apply to one law and not another.

Since the Constitution is a matter of politics and the Justice system is defined in the constitution...
