But if this is what you grow up with, how do you change it? When I see young people, who supposedly are educated, well at least they got Thai university degrees, but still have this mai pen rai mentality, then I wonder myself if there is much hope for a better future here. Of course it worked in the past… So why change it?

Hi MAC,I don,t have to spell it out to you that due to technology the world is a rapidly changing, and you just have to adapt accordingly , what was good even 5 years ago is of no consequence now , the dinosaurs died out because they could not change as the world changed, Thailand is no different, one only has to look around you at the mindset of the Thai Chinese and the normal Issan Thai , did you ever read the old fable about the ANT AND THE CRICKET?, with the Thai Chinese they think about tomorrow and the day after, from what i have witnessed with the normal Issan Thai "tomorrow" do,s not exist!

we can easily agree with you when you desribe a few of your very personal expectations & disappointments.
you are not alone and examples are plentiful.

but that only proves the cleverness of thai people who refuse to work for others
and make others rich while given themselves just a few satang.

there are also a few bad examples like tax-sin & sonthi
who impudently exploit their countryfellows
while claiming to love us at the same time (thai rak thai!)
they pretend to want only our very best (i.e.: our money & manpower)

most foreigners come for holidays or for retirement to thailand
because they feel good with the thai way of living.
just some think they have the right to look down on thais and teach them what they call 'progress'
thais want sanuk & sabai, not 'stick & carrot'.

if farangs really love & want to teach thais, please apply for a work-permit
and volunteer as a teacher at a regular school.
THAT's the way it goes ..... but don't rant on a forum.

it would be wise to learn just a bit of the thai 'savoir vivre'
and take it back to the dark & cold farang-countries.

i have seen thais working all day, getting 200 baht,
buying a pack of cigarettes, lao & couple of beers and sit with their friends
and share their just deserts - even with those who did not work - peacefully & happy.

the sheer sight of those 'happy innocent children' fills my heart with joy......
the sheer reading of some grumblers complaints against them makes me sick

Simple question , as the Chinese Thai,s own a vast % of the businesses in this country , what do you think would happen if they all just up stakes and went back en masse to the country of their ancestors, they way i view it this country would be totally bankrupt over night, mind there would be one good thing come to think of it in your opinion, and that is there would be millions of people not being "EXPLOITED", there are now tens of millions all over the world screaming for the right to be "exploited" by some rich industrialist,LOL.

I do not want to sound patronising or anything like that.
I am teaching my students (470) about "SMS" and human factors, do you..... (anyone out there, know what the subjects represent to current Thai culture?)
I know? (I think) But it is just a rhetorical question to understand what some people think on the matter.

If you mean short as in SMS messages, no, they could probably teach me!
I do teach them not to write in 100 words what can clearly be said in 10.
SMS = Safety Management Systems!

Scy, I don't know what you mean!
However, if you want further information, may I suggest you refer to the "Joke" forum and take the matter up with the appropriate "minister"
Yours in sincerity, SJB (MAD leader)
NB, you need not apply for the course, just give me lots of money and a "pass" will be alocated to you.

Thank you very much villager for your kind words, I am truly grateful. I think it would be very nice when we could sit down and talk about the old time. Am sure you could teach me a thing or two.

I really agree scyriacus, most especially with your last two paragraphs. It is not necessarily the money in your pocket, but rather the happiness in your heart, that really distinguishes the truly wealthy. I knew many people in USA with lots of money, but all most of them also have or are on the way to stress-related diseases. I repeat the best part of your post below.

Sloth haven’t you consider thinking first before you write, I thought you are a thinker. When you are agreeing with Scyriacus didn’t stop to think first, that while they spend some of there hard earns money on drink, cigarettes etc maybe they should think about their duty first. It’s very well for you to say that it not necessarily to have money in your pocket. Have you forgotten that if father don’t have money left to give mother to buy food for their children, who is happy and who is going without food. Of course there are time that we need to unwind ourselves after work but they cannot be doing it everyday. Thai majority do have big problem with alcoholism and how much do you think they can do with 200baht a day? I think it would be better if you were to make a campaign about real wage increase or maybe try to change some local businesses to improves their worker income, I think that would have been better.

Scyriacus, you have been talking about exploitation why don’t start a campaign down your local, ask the business people around there to increase their worker wages and stop exploited the worker by pay them only 200baht per day. I think 500baht should be a start don’t you think!

Dear Voice, I personally would give the people education first and increase their salaries after that. As long as the latest mobile phone is more important than a hygienic bathroom, just as example, then the increase in salary will not help much. But I generally like the way you are thinking.

Btw, the phone number you gave me, is that a Spanish or UK mobile? If it is Spanish, does it go through to you when you in LON?
