Farang Becoming a Thai National

Good Lord man - are you serious or has the sun got to you?
You will NEVER be a Thai national - you may get a Thai passport, but you will never be viewed as a Thai national as long as you have a hole in your.....mouth.
For starters just look at the financial criteria.....anything there strike you as slightly out of balance??? - or are most Thai nationals on a minimum salary of eighty grand?
In most countries when you become a national you have exactly the same rights as citizens born there, i.e. your salary is whatever you can earn. God help you if you ever need to throw yourself on the mercy of the NHS with a Thai passport and don't forget the rigeramole you will have getting into most countries.
Yeah, a British guy with a Thai passport.....bring the men in white coats

Hi villager - nice to be here, lots of interesting topics though I seem to have one post deleted already and I have absolutely no idea why...mai bpen rai.
It just does my head in when I hear about 'wannabe Thai's'. I have absolutely no objection to anyone being whatever they want it's a free world ;) isn't it? It's not as if they are ever going to be anything other than a 'rich farang' no matter if they carry 10 Thai passports and they will still have to pay premium rates at most places... as if proprietors care whether you hold a Thai or Fiji passport - you are what you are and you look like a nice little earner to them. I mean just leaving aside all the rigmorole you have to go through and the unfair salary requirements...surely these guys should wake up and smell the coffee. There are lots of good ways to reside here without putting yourself through hell....and for the future do they think any possible new prospective partner wants a foreigner with a Thai passport??
I really do think something 'strange' happens to the heads of some people when they get here.

As a thai citizen you can be dissappeared and no one notices. As a Thai citizen you cannot easily visit Europe, Britain or America just when you feel like it. Anyway, even if you satisfy all the requirement you go into the pool waiting for the annual lucky draw. Anyone who wants to become a Thai citizen is in serious need of psychiatric help.

I find your comment about anyone wanting to become a Thai citizen needs psychiatric help to be condescending.

For a hill tribe person who has lived in Thailand all his or her life, becoming a Thai citizen is probably one of the only hopes of moving up the ladder. Some of them do obtain citizenship.

There are prominent foreign business people working and living in Thailand who have become Thai citizens for a variety of cultural and business reasons.I know of one who said he did so for the sake of his employees. I understand what he means. In need of psychiatric help?

OMG - Condescending?? You're having a joke with us aren't you?
The OP is a 26 year old hooray henry with a British passport, who got a little too much sun in Thailand. Nevertheless he is privileged to have a British passport that guarantee him entry into most countries of the world. I think when he gets over his serious case of sunstroke - he might think differently....he could have been traumatised in UK for all we know.... there is obviously something wrong!
To compare one with such privilege to hilltribe people isn't even like comparing apples to oranges it's more like comparing earth to the sun. Most hilltribe people have been denied the rights of citizenship - some even the rights of an ID card and anything they can get is better than what Thailand allows them, so I think you need to come up with a slightly better comparison if your argument is to hold water.
The guy who did it for the sake of his employees.....you understand what he means....how about passing on your knowledge to us so that we can get to grips with it too?

Yes, I am very puzzled by this comment, "I know of one who said he did so for the sake of his employees."

I cannot think of any situation where this might be true, please explain more.

I have been thinking about this since I read it....yeah I know, I'm sad. But it is such a strange statement and indeed a strange thing for someone to do. The writer doesn't state the nationality of the altruistic person that converted to Thaism for the sake of the employees and this would be interesting to find out.

Syriacus, rather than indulging in a pointless attack on the British, which I cannot even be bothered to defend as the situation is well understood by any intelligent person.
Can we not persue the question which has been avoided up until now which is about this person who obtained Thai nationality for the sake of his workers.
Namely what was his previous nationality and how did changing it help his workers.
We really should not take this topic further until we get an answer.
