Writer jailed for 'insulting' Thai royals
Re: Writer jailed for 'insulting' Thai \\ ////
My father, a "pugalist in the back-alleys of Liverpool" ALWAYS WANTED ME TO DO BETTER THAN HIM. I have achieved my Fathers wishes (and my own)
This is not a slant on my parents BTW, they did the best they could in a world of sh>it post WW2. Sundays were special!
My Father would bring home a whole orange and slice it into five equal portions. One each for my Mother and Father, and one each for my younger brother, sister, and me.
Luxury some might say, if they follow Monty Python!

This forum is getting more and more confusing. Not sure what Mr Nice Guy is trying to say here, deep-sixed?¿? Like in; throw overboard? or, get rid off? or, move? or, displace? or, propel? or, impel? or, discard? or, fling? or, toss? or, toss out? or, toss away? or, chuck out? or, cast aside? or, dispose? or, throw out? or, cast out? or, throw away? or, cast away? or, put away? or, to dispose of, discard, or get rid of: “The board of directors deep-sixed the proposal without even reading it.” This phrase is derived from the noun “deep six,” meaning burial at sea and referring to the depth of water necessary for such a burial. The term was later used as slang for a grave (customarily six feet underground) and, by extension, as a verb meaning “to kill.” or, or, or…![]()

We are not supposed to express our opinions no more or what? I mean, if we are not supposed to express our opinions, what the heck are we doing in a forum then? I thought that a forum is a place were people meet to express their opinions? Of course, I may be wrong…![]()

PacMac - I sorry if my use of slang confused some users. I will generally stand by your range of definitions. But if if my powers of moderating may seem strong, it does not include some Matrix level ability of being able to kill anybody.

Because they had made references to the Thai '\\ ////' in a snarky way that still led to it being obvious of what institution they were speaking, while at the same time saying things that would not be tolerated in this vein.
Now as I am trying to play 'Mr Nice' as PacMac referred to me, I gotta say I am suprised this thread was even allowed - not that I would have 'deep sixed' it straight away. But that more hardline moderators allowed it to fly at all.
On a last note, I apologize for the delay in my reply. I was enjoying something commonly referred to as a 'weekend'.

Does a dog or a cat have dignity or is it purely a human attribute? Is a poor man entitled to the same claims to dignity as an Emperor or a \\ ///////?
Dignity comes from the Latin word "dignas", it does not translate easily into English, it meant far more than dignity, it also meant respect from others as well as self respect, it also meant "face", it meant being seen to be honorable and just, it meant integrity.
If a Roman lost his "dignas" he would often commit suicide.
To such a Roman, the concept of his "dignas" having to be protected by law would not only be preposterous but would actually mean a major loss of his "dignas".
To a Roman "dignas" was earnt, not simply an accident of birth or wealth. A Roman would regard any law to protect his "dignas" as an extreme insult.

You are correct, I just went back one step further in etymology.
L dignitās worthiness, equiv. to dign(us) worthy + -itās -ity
As such I got one vowel wrong, Dignus not dignas, a long time since I learnt Latin
gravitas is another similar word in meaning, but refers to what is visible rather than intrinsic.
