How can I get rid of Geckos???

Does anybody know what to do to clear my house from geckos?
Catch? Kill? Chase away? Is it possible?

I too am not fond of geckos invading my house through every small opening, making a mess on walls and floor and crawling over my kitchen counters at night. While I suppose they do eat mosquitoes, I have often wondered how they manage to ever catch one - the mosquitoes must be amazingly stupid and cooperative to place themselves in such danger! Besides, I have screens on every window and door, and a mosquito is a rare event inside the house, so who needs the geckos? They are out in the garden by the score, and some larger lizards as well. I wish they would stay there - the pickings are certainly better outside than inside!

Fair comment I suppose ,each one to his own , but a short while ago (July 21) whilst my wife and I was visiting friends in Korat ,we went to a local Noodle shop for some Issan food and a few cold beers ,whilst there I observed a large Tokay Gecko rushing down the wall to sieze and eat quite a large centipede who's bite is incredibly painful and could put one in hospital for treatment for 2 days or more, as I said each one to his own

A large lizard catching a large centipede is a different story altogether. But I have another: Just a few mornings ago I was startled by a gecko hiding under the hand towel in my kitchen. When I swatted at him with the towel, he landed in my breakfast! To tell the truth, I never saw one of these otherwise interesting creatures until I came to Thailand.

Taurus,
You come up with information that is quite the same as Roger Ramjet already gave me. Telling me nothing that I do not know yet, leads me to the conclusion that calling me Silly world, you tried to insult me. If that is your aim and/or if you are just a rude foreigner, then I understand why you use Taurus as nickname on this Forum. Bulls are not particully known for their politeness as you may realise. Have a nice evening anyway!

Geckos eat insects and spiders - and keep your house relatively free from various creepy crawlies.
They are held to smooth surfaces by minute hairs on their feet.

It is considered a very bad omen in Thailand if a gecko falls off in front of you.

They are not just harmless - they are helpful.
They are the only kind of lizard that can make a noise/sound - if you watch, you will see they are incredibly territorial and a lot of the noise they make is to ward off other geckos.

The Tokay - the really big gecko - is a stunning creature - don't put your finger too close though - they have a powerful bite if threatened.

i can't think why anyone would want to kill one.....apart from my mother who is PHOBIC of reptiles - with her we have to pretend the room has been cleared. I seriously think she should have some therapy concerning this as it interferes with her enjoyment when she stays in Thailand.

most animals fit into an ecosystem of some sort and if you start eradicating one species, you will give an unnatural advantage to another. (e.g. - kill snakes and you'll get infested with rats).

Mozzies like all insects settle for periods of time - just take a few minutes to watch your friendly neighborhood gecko and you'll soon see what a good job he does.

In answer to the OP...the only substance I know that controls the number of geckos is mothballs.

The outside of our house is lightly coloured and well lit in certain areas...it attracts the insects and therefore the geckos...so they are mostly on the outside of the house rather than the inside. Keep the rubbish bins outside and use Dettol (or equivalent) on the kitchen surfaces and wash the floors (if tiled) with it once a week...Good hygiene such as this will stop the insects and hence the geckos.

During the rainy season we end up with a lot of mice in the roof of the house, which attract the larger Tokay gecko. This is a creature to respect...when it bites through fear it rarely lets go! If they are too much of a nuisance (because of the noise they make) then they can be caught using a slip-knot trap attached to a bamboo pole. The children in our area get 20-30 baht a gecko...

When I first moved to Thailand they did give me a scare a few times . . . . but now I just smile and sit and enjoy watching them running around and saving my legs from more mosquitobites.I think of them as houshold pets and could NEVER dream of trying to get rid of them.I hope you change your mind and come to love those fun little guys . . . . :D
