Locals main abusers of children

Locals main abusers of children

The vast majority of former child sex workers surveyed on behalf of a local NGO said their main clients were Cambodian men.

The executive director of the NGO that commissioned the study described the finding as ``very surprising'', according to Saturday's Phnom Penh Post.

The study by the group ``End Child Prostitution, Abuse and Trafficking in Cambodia'', states that paedophiles tend to be Cambodians, rather than foreigners, contrary to the usually held assumption that paedophilia is a Western problem and that Cambodians are not engaged in such activities.

Chin Chanveasna, executive director of the group, said that local demand for commercial sex with children was often overlooked, as NGOs and other stakeholders focused on foreigners. In the study, presented at a conference on trafficking on Friday, all but one of 43 former child sex workers surveyed in Phnom Penh said their regular clients were Cambodian men.

Of the 13 respondents who reported having sold their virginity, 68% said their clients had been Cambodian, according to the study. Chin Chanveasna said the study, which also surveyed 47 Cambodian men from male-frequented establishments such as beer gardens and snooker clubs, found many local men preferred child sex workers.

Cambodian men prefer beautiful, fair-skinned and younger-looking sex workers, basically minors, he said.

The powerful and the rich especially spend thousands of dollars to have sex with virgin children, he said.

The study highlights the fact that more attention needed to be paid to local demand for commercial sex with children, an issue that he said had been the subject of little research.

Samleang Seila, of the child protection NGO Action Pour Les Enfants, said the media's focus on foreign sex criminals could be one of the main contributors to the misconception that there are fewer local perpetrators of sex crimes. dpa

Wonder if this might not be the case for Thailand too?

Give the man a coconut! Of course it is the same in Thailand. Thai men know the places to go, They speak the same language, so can make the deals or offers. Plus from a young age the men in the villages and towns have very little to do in the evenings, They have to find the Girls who are not street wise and that normally means young and naive. There are hundreds of children P6 and M1 school age who will fall into the trap due to lack of knowledge, money, pressure or drink/drugs. I watch students from the Polytechnic hang about outside the M school justing to pick up the students and get them to jump class! I find M4 girls working hosts at bars, and Uni students conected to Mama san's. Total farang in our area 200 married perhaps 15 playing around.

This post, like many that I come across on this site, appears to me to be a thinly veiled aspersion aimed at the Indigenous population of this. our host nation. It is crass to attempt to defend the 'foreign' sex tourists/pests by suggeesting that "perhaps" more locals are involved in the illegal sex industry than their farang counterparts. Of course there are more locals involved, there are around 5.6m registered people in BKK of which the vast majority are of Thai origin, contrast this with the 150,000(perhaps) mid to long term foriegn residents living around Bangkok and it becomes glaringly obvious based on numbers alone that this is the case. The same goes for Phnom Phen with a population of around 2m, 90% of which are of Cambodian origin(locals). Its simple mathematics!!! If you were to walk into a brothel in the UK or the US how many of the punters would be foreign, do you think? Or what about convicted sex offenders, do you think that most of them would be "local", perhaps!?

I think the real issue is based on the moral values that are 'supposedly' shared by us well educated and largely god fearing westerners. In South East Asian and indeed many other parts of the world it is not unusual to sleep with or even marry girls who are very young. It is not seen as deviant and in some countries it is even an integral part of their culture and has been for hundreds, maybe thousands of years. This goes for prostituion too. We 'westerners' on the other hand are different all together. Our governments protect children by setting a statutory age based on public consensus and common 'moral' values. We know that in our culture it is wrong to have sex with children and everyone( bar peadophiles and freaks) shares this belief or at least adheres to the law. Prostitution is largely still illegal in most (not all, obviously) western countries and it is generally frowned upon by normal social actors to seek the services of a prostitute or to offer yourself in return for money. It is taboo, it is wrong.

The laws need to change to protect the weak and the innocent, educate the stupid and wake up the ignorant and it should be us who should lead by example and not just shrug our collective shoulders and say "when in rome".

I am going to start a thread on "The Dissillusionment of Farangs and the Reasons Behind it" so keep your eyes opened as it will be an interesting one to follow

"Monkey painful! One is not calling them children, but their acts are like those of children! both good and bad! and well! I had one or two call me daddy, and I have been known to ask who's your daddy now (LOL)"

Above is a quote from you from a previous thread.. Read it and then think about your comments at the top of this post. Do you think that either of them were misguided? LOL

Hmm! One is about adults acting like a child in the attitude and manners, the other is about abuse of children! Nothing to think about really except the view of how people only pick out the information that will benifit their views! (A bit like a wife really...Only hear the parts she wants to hear!)
