I think the problem with many farangs is that they come to live in a developing country and expect a first world level of service. Thailand is a very poor country and can't afford everything that you want. If you want better service then go back and live in your own country.

I've lived in Thailand for several years, mainly around Chiang Mai, and I've never visited Phuket or Pattaya, and have no desire to do so. Right now, I'm working in Yangon, and have been pleasantly surprised by the experience. Crime against foreigners is almost non-existent, and people are genuinely friendly ( no false smiles while they work out how to rip you off). I hope Myanmar never gets overrun by tourism like Thailand.

Personal security in Thailand or anywhere else means staying alert and having dependable people around knowing where you are. I lived and traveled throughout Thailand for 6 years without incident because I recognized the simple does and donts. As a world traveler all my life, I know my limitations and act accordingly.

Of course not - no crime in Hawaii.
Thank God.... :o

After enjoying Thailand for 3-4 months at a time since Y2K, I recently moved to Thailand from Hawaii. After living there for 20 years, I have to say anyone who thinks it's much different from Thailand must have their head in a sack. Actually, if one stays away from tourist areas, and avoids known high crime neighborhoods, both places are pretty nice.

When I first came to Thailand a farang told me "If you 're involved in an accident here with a Thai, you'll always be in the wrong no matter what" :o ... I recalled that comment later when a friend told me how he'd stopped his car at the traffic lights at night when three under age, unlicenced and drunken youths on a motor bike without lights swerved around the corner at speed, lost cotrol and crashed into the side of his stationary car... When the police arrived he told them what had happened and they said to him "Did you have your lights on" ? ...When my friend said , "Yes of course I did'" :| :x . Their response was "Well, it's your fault because you should have seen them" 8-)

The main issue is that we assume they do it only to farang.
This is not.
The brother of my wife was shot by a man who is known in the village they live in.
My brother in law was shot in a public area and there ae witnesses who did see it.
This all happend in 2009.
By a judge even a seach warrent and a notice to arrest is given.
Up to now no action has been taken.
This would be inpossible outside of Thailand.
Realy unbelievable.

Locals are not in the least interested about farang deaths,
and I do not see any reason why the Thai police should give
precedence in the reportage and investigation of the crime
just because the victim was a farang.
Being a farang does not entitle you to any special treatment
either living or dead !

[b]After dozens of murders, bashings and rip offs perpetrated against farangs in Phuket and elsewhwere in Thailand, only two Thai offenders to my knowledge have been convicted and only because they murdered a travel agent :o  ... Maybe the bureaucrats and police were motivated by a sense of necessity rather than having to explain to the world how they get all their ill gotten gains and tea money   ... Such things can only happen in Thailand  :( :?
