Hotel fires in Thailand do happen and it will affect tourism badly also.
Hotels have duty to ensure that their clients stay in a safe enviroment. That includes keeping uptodate
all safety equipment and ensuring its checked on a regular basis. This should happen no matter how old the hotel
is. They should also be issued with a safety certificate which is valid by a government department.
How will Hotel fires affect tourism?
Do not forget that when a traveller goes to another country they buy travel insurance. This insurance is only valid if the person adheres to the policy and the small print also.
If a hotel does not have uptodate safety measures and an uptodate safety cert then many people will find that they
are not covered by the policy.It does depend on the policy and company though. So if there is a fire and a person is seriously injured in that fire they could not be covered by their policy and will be left to pay the bill when they recover,
if the hotel has not kept its safety measures uptodate and has a safety cert issued by the government also.
Holiday companies and Tour companies will look at this very seriously in the western world more so than terrorism.
Why is this?
I know for a fact that in the UK the company will also be held responsible if anything happens to a person or persons who have booked a holiday through that company.
They will also sued for allowing that hotel with no safety measures no safety cert no uptodate safety measures or cert to be part of the holiday that has been booked by a client.
This has happened to tour/holiday companies in the UK already in places such as cyprus, corfu and spain etc.
It also includes safety measures for swimming pools etc.
The company will also be in trouble if they do not check the hotel that the company uses as part of the holiday and all certs.
Websites in the UK where hotels can be booked are also responsible for advertising hotels that are safe for their clients.
All hotels no matter how old should have uptodate safety measures in place and certs from the government up to date also.
This includes swimming pools etc and children play areas also.
If not then tourism could be affected very badly. AS who wants to stay in a hotel that is not safe, especially if a family is involved with children

I was hoping to find more information and details regarding topic. But apparently the subject matter and the 'information' provided don't seem to match. Very little is detail is given to "How Safe is Your Hotel". What is written is more focussed on the affect to tourism than to "How Safe is Your Hotel".

- We just told over and over that a safety certificate is needed or required from a government agency.
- Then we are told in detail how it affects tourism more that terrorism would.

I guess what I'm saying is that maybe the topic should be - "How Hotel Fires Affect the Tourism Industry".

Hotel fires.how safe is your hotel is again exactly what is says. It makes people think about how safe the hotel is
and that they may also not be covered by the travel insurance policy.
It is all interconnected and also some simple things people who check in hotels can do.Such as ask to see
the latest safety cert from the government. If the hotel asks why they just tell the truth and if the hotel
tells someone no. Then they should go to another hotel.
It will affect tourism also.

In a country where its leaders show by their own actions that it is ok to not follow the rule of law and societal norms, how can any tourist or local who stay in a hotel actually knowingly ever be safe.

Where the laws and constitution are written to aid and abet the privileged - documentation is just a piece of paper; it doesn't signify that the local reulations have been met.

Look at the Santika pub fire. Have the culprits been charged and judged to the satisfaction of society? Or have we forgotten?

Yes I agree with what you say but you miss the point. A document is just a document whether its authentic or not.
The point is that the travel insurance is valid even if the Hotel is not as safe as the documents say it is.As long as It has a valid upto date safety documentation issued from the relevant government department.

The point is that I've yet see any fire sprinklers on ANY building or room in all of Thailand... granted the buildings are mostly made from cement and not wood or plaster, but with small windows and tons of weird paint, these things are like chemical bombs waiting to happen. Anyway most fire experts know that victims die mostly from heat and smoke and poison and not the fire itself, so this is still a huge safety concern...

But half the reason tourists come to Thailand is because of lax enforcement of anything, or being able to pay a cop 500 baht and look the other way on your lack of driver license.

Anyway the point is not really that landlords don't follow building regulations, the point is that the regulations themselves are non-existent or simply not enough for modern society. But that is Thailand.

Interesting article and comments. I also would have liked to see the article focus more on hotels that are preventing such accidents. Although with the other comments, it sounds like not too many in Thailand are interested in bringing the buildings up to date.
