The loss of DDT

Postby R.Evans on Wed May 23, 2007 10:01 am

When DDT was available, mosquito breeding areas were eliminated and Malaria and other afflictions became rare rather than the norm. Unfortunatly it was found that DDT had strong toxic effects as well, and its use was banned virtualy worldwide.
It is a pity that modern science has not been able to engineer a "safe" form of DDT.,which could then be sprayed on the breeding grounds

Mosquitos control & Elimination

Postby Widawan Jumpa on Fri Dec 21, 2007 8:55 pm

I have suggested reducing mosquitoes and exposure to diseases. They many carry can be done by chemical and non chemical methods. You can do to control
Mosquitoes around your home, Eliminates the water in buckets, containers, plastic covers
or any other where mosquitoes can breed. Change the water in barrels, plant trays,
water containers, flower vases, Drain temporary pools of water with dirt or any other
once a week to destroy mosquitoes.
Prevent your exposure to mosquitoes, if there is a mosquito borne disease
Warning in effect, stays inside the evening when mosquitoes are active. Other
materials oils and films disperse as a thin layer on the surface of the water which
cause larvae to drown. Liquid larvicide’s products, tablet, pellet, granular, and
briquette formulation is also applied by Mosquito’s controllers to breeding areas.

Widawan. If you examine the history and the development of disease preventions like mosquito prevention in the developed countries like USA. Yes, USA used to have problems with mosquito transmitted diseases like malaria. USA never did eliminate mosquito infestation problems. So what happened since they are less and less mosquito transmitted diseases in USA??? The improve social and economic development helped improve living standards. National and local governments made requirements for building standards. As the results, every American homes have window and door screens that prevent bugs from enter the homes, improved drainage systems, improved sanitation systems, and laws that prevent littering and cleaning the neighborhoods. There is no need for excessive use of chemicals. Technology existed today for incorporating insecticides into the materials that used to make mosquito netting, screens, and in paints. When the water system is clean, and fishes are abondon. Fishes and water organisms will eat the mosquito larva. Overall, building codes made the number one impact on human health with simple window and door screens.

The lovely mosquito

Postby Leum Laaou on Mon Dec 24, 2007 1:27 pm

No effective or sustainable method is available at present.

Pesticides applied in rural areas harm the environment and we can't go on poisoning the water every year just to kill the mosquito.
And control does mean every year, indefinitely, the further application of strong pesticides.

Personal protection is best.

Eat garlic, try citrus on your skin, Bushman's repellant lightly smeared around your bedding and net, and if out and about use it sparingly and dab it on your clothes. Grow citronella/lemon grass. Harvest it, dry it, burn it around and in your home. Go to Lotut and buy some flyspray for home use. Empty standing water.

Apparently dress in light colours, though I never do.

I have been visiting Thailand for many years and always have a problem with mosquitoes.

Voracious is the best word for them...what to do?

I live now on Borneo right next to a natural swamp/pond with fish in it....yes there are loads of mossies but not as many as I experience here in Pattaya nor do they fly around my house like here......

Doesn't the Municipality do checks on larvae infestation and Fog the areas or is it a problem with the drains.
Living in Malaysia I thought would be worse with mosquitoes after all the drains are open and clean toilets!!! well you can forget that..... Malaysia and clean toilets do not go hand in hand!!!!

Thailand to all intents is considerably cleaner so why the big problem?

You can't get rid of mosquitoes - they represent a huge bio-mas and a significant part of the food chain.

You an try to limit the ones that carry disease in certain areas and you can also take action to protect yourself.

firstly the Dengue carrying mozzie is particularly suited to Urban environments it is able top breed in the tiniest drop of water. If you remove all possible sites from your home, you will significantly reduce the risk e.g. remove empty flower pots, old tires or anything that may hold a small amount of water.

Dengue is transmitted from one infected person to another by the mosquito, whose range is limited, so it is infected people that help to carry the disease over distance.

The Dengue season coincides with the wet season. The mosquito is a DAYTIME flyer and is most active at dawn and dusk, so these are the times to take most care.

wear long-sleeved and legged garments, use DEET repellent and aoid areas where the mosquitoes proliferate.

IOf course Thai people get bitten! Tens of thousands of Thai people gt Dengue every year - in a small number (tens) of cases it can be fatal. As of yet there is no effective vaccine as the virus has more than one strain. Repeat infection by another strain may result in a more serious for of the disease. Sometimes symptoms can be so minor that te "victim" is unaware they have the disease, later infections can result in internal bleeding or eve death.

There is a widely accepted theory that ALL people are bitten by mosquitoes but only some get an itchy reaction to the bites - the result is that m,any people who think they are "not bitten" and therefore safe may indeed gave a false sense of security.

there is no immunity to bites - there are factors that allow you to be bitten more easily.
Mosquitoes only have very primitive senses, but they are evolved to allow the animal to find it's target. Essentially that might be a large water buffalo in the dark. To do this they can spot silhouettes and are sensitive to CO2 emissions e.g sweat and breath.
The key then is to try not to look like a buffalo; wear LIGHT colored clothing and try to avoid sweat and heavy breathing!?!?!

Apply anti-mosquito lotions and sprays.
Cover your body with clothes, including thick socks, even if you wear sandals.
It's said that mosquitoes are more attracted to dark colors, so wear white, maybe even thin nightwear. Do not apply perfumes and colognes .
