Englishman to divorce in Thailand

Postby zampa on Sun Sep 02, 2007 9:19 pm

Hi,

I am coming to Thailand in November to get divorced. I know i have to go to the local district office (Amphur), to get the divorce registered in Thailand.

Can anyone clarify what i have to do then to get the divorce recognised in england.

I have been told i have to go to the foreign affairs office in bangkok to get it legalized ???

Be grateful for some help.....and the costs involed to do the legal side...!!!

Regards

Zampa,

sorry to hear about the divorce. Anyways it's your personal business.

I've not been divorced but from general experience of dealing with Amphurs on legal documents, I can offer suggestions.

- I believe that the divorce papers have to be signed by the wife & husband at the district office. If there are any fees, it will be very little clerical fees. Make sure you tell the worker that this will be taken for further process to legalize to make sure whether any other forms are required.

- Legalization fees can range from 250 baht to 5000 baht. Depending on the document and possible translation that might be required.

I divorced from the UK, just contacted a solicitor in bangkok who found my thai wife and had her sign the divorce papers sent over from my Uk solicitor. Then he posted them back to my solicitor in the UK who presented them to the judge who then signed my divorce papers. Cost about £2000 in total for both solicitors and of course a small payment to her. But was well worth it. Good luck mate

I found all the answers to my questions on marriage AND divorce (some Thai marriages may not be even registered in the UK) on the following link (British Consular Services)

This sounds nice that the embassy would do the divorce. Was your wife present during the process?
