Mosquitos

Postby Carolyn Chapline on Fri May 20, 2005 12:12 am

Is there a way to significantly reduce mosqitios in thailand. I get bitten every time i go their and foreign mosqito repelents don't work. You have to buy thai made repelents.
With dengue fever and the diseases that mosqitos bring I wish their was a permanant way to rid the country of mosqitos.

I agree, In December/Jan I was bitten badly on certain nights, even in Bangkok. It takes about a week for each bite to disappear and whats more they dont bite Thais for some reason. I find the mosquitos sneak into the room at night and go for unexposed arms mainly. One night the blood had dried around the bite to a black colour, really unpleasant. Some restaurants put down the little mossy traps which are a help. Other than that, be careful.

Has anyone discovered by the mosquitos don't bite Thai's?
Perhaps it is the food eaten.
Eating Garlic helps to repel mosquitos.

What is special about repellant used in Thailand.
Deet is supposed to work all over the world.

I got denge fever in the West Indies. It was horrible.

Floyd. Mosquitos do bite Thais. However, we have been bitten so many times that our bodies do not react to the bits as much as foreigners. Thai mosquitos repellants are based on local extracts from herbs and plants. Carolyn is right. DEET does not work well. There is no single best answer in dealing with mosquitos.

The most amazing thing I find in mosquitos is its quick response and take-off at any try to hit it with your hand. 90% of the slaps end in vain. What gives the mosquitos that light speed reaction and in the proper direction at each hit ?. Do mosquitos see ?, do they calculate direction and speed of a hit ?, What if the hit came while the mosquito is sucking the sweet liquid ?, it reacts with thesame speed. how could it do that with such a skill ?

Mosquitos

Well, American mossies certainly bite my Thai wife! <laugh> I suspect, in part, it may be diet and body size, since mosquitoes hunt in part by heat from the target and odor. Thai-made repellants work best for Thai mossies of course. Also, it may help to smoke cigarettes, as when I smoked a pack or so a day, they pretty well left me alone. (Of course, that's not healthy and I've stopped.)

Straight answer? Take the advice of a Thai druggist or two on what repellent to use, always use a net over your beds and keep the window screens intact. Try not to leave the doors open. For the rest of it? Grin and bear it - honestly.

I send a particularly strong Aussie made repellant called BUSHMANS to friends in Thailand and they tell me thats the best they can get, its a little more expensive than the average but really works very well here although Mozzies dont normally bother me too much!

You may want to try using a repellant known as "REPEL" which has been tried in quite a few mosquitos infested areas in the region and proven very effective. However, when the insect is really hungry it will penetrate all protective shield.

If they 'bug' you that much : ) and you really wanna keep them at bay (even in an air con room}, get a good fan and point it over said sleeping area and if number one doesn't keep the critters away push button number 2. (if you move around use sweep) If somehow a kamikaze mossie gets through (and I doubt it ) and you get bitten, simply use tiger balm.
