Is it safe to visit?

I'm an expat living in Thailand and regularly travel across the country (Chiang Mai to Hat Yai). In general it's a safe country, albeit the situation in the south is always a concern. While no one has a crystal ball to see what the situation will be like in Bangkok in mid/late January the emotions here are escalating. The "Yellow" people have already shown they have no regard for the well being of foreigners/tourists when they closed the airport. It's difficult to imagine 20,000 "Red" people going to Bangkok and not making some sort of similar protest. I can tell you I do plan on traveling within the country in January however, being single I don't have to be concerned about my wife's safety, being self-employed and financially independent here in Thailand I'm not too concerned about delays, additional costs, or having a vacation ruined as a result of the closure of the transportation system(s) or ? And finally, I'm not planning on going to Bangkok.

Having a Foreign Minister who thinks it is fun to close down an airport, you may never know. As seen in the past, it takes only a handfull of id*ots to close down an airport. But do not worry too much, they give you water and food…

Generally. I would say, it is ok to come to Thailand. I think that they got the message and will keep airports open in the future.

Safe to visit... of course. As I have said many many times -

1st - ignore foreign media hype - it is mostly tainted sensationalized BS.
2nd - stay out of Bangkok as much as possible - its noisy, busy and polluted + thats where all the crap happens ;) joking joking...
3rd - stay out of the deep south along the Malay border and you'll do just fine. If you do have to go to Malaysia go by plane.

The key word is DEEP south... Trust me when I say I had a very very bad life altering experience just outside Hat Yai is Sept. '06. The event made me appreciate my life a lot more. I won't go into specifics.
I do not trust the deep south at all.

Getting around Thailand is so easy! Go the west coast route (north) and you are quickly into Burma, follow the east coast route and the oppertunities are endless! Vietnam, Laos, Campochia....... How else can one get round Thailand? Oh yeah, go south, Indonesia, Malasia, and Singapore.
Why would one want to avoid such a beatiful country? AMAZING THAILAND!

'JB, I reckon we should move that discussion with Git about motorcycling from Bangkok to the south into a new thread, since we've been reminded that we did go a little off-topic, but the discussion is still worthy of its own topic, if you think GIT would like to go with it bewtween now and November. We could even run with the whole Changi-Vientiane itinery, and I'd really like to have some "on-the-ground" information regarding the whereabouts of 20 baht coin-operated washing machines along the way. I dunno if it's worth a new thread or not, but a sub-forum like this might be the right place to thread it, and we have until November.
