A Well of Knowledge

Return to previous page

Dr Prawase Wasi, a Magsaysay award winner and highly respected social commentator,
describes King Bhumibol as “a person of learning” who imparts knowledge he has gained
from study and experience, and also sets a shining example for others to follow and learn
from. But before imparting knowledge and setting an example, there must be understanding.
And very early in his reign, His Majesty sought to understand.

With a camera around his neck, a notebook in hand, and charts and maps under his arm,
His Majesty has sought to understand the hardships faced by his rural subjects, adopting
a comprehensive approach to discover how one thing relates to another. His keen mind
and persistence in solving problems, explains Dr Prawase, will yield him new information
all the time. He is thus able to always come up with practical solutions.

In a broader sense, His Majesty has sought to impart his knowledge, wisdom, and
understanding to all his subjects. On important occasions therefore, it is now expected that
he will offer advice on various issues, ranging from matters of national interest to even how
ordinary people should carry on with their daily lives.

Dr Prawase sums up the role of His Majesty in these words : “Ours is a king with knowledge.
People love and respect him. He is a man of true learning. He uses knowledge to guide his life.
In a sense he is the school principal of the country.”
