The 1st January 2002 marks the auspicious 110th birthday of His Royal Highness Prince Mahidol of Songkla, a figure who has made numerous beneficial contributions in the fields of medicine, public health, nursing pharmacy, dentistry, fishery, in addition to making a difference. In the navy, His Royal Highness Prince Mahidol participated in the development of royal medical schools and Siriraj Hospital in terms of building construction plans and general medical progress - with the aim to raise the medical education and hospital standards in Thailand to international levels.
This is also a great occasion to remember the many great deeds that were done by His Royal Highness Prince Mahidol. As a memory to the Prince, Prince Mahidol Award Foundation Under the Royal Patronage was set up to recognise individual or an organisation for making beneficial contributions in the fields of medicine and public health. The award will be an inspiration for people to make further progress in the mentioned fields, thus benefiting the world as a whole. The award recognises not only local names, but also people and organisations from different parts of the world, irrespective of race or nation. This creates a feeling of harmony and bonding amongst the people, resulting in great contributions to mankind.
It is hoped that good deeds are not recognised only on this auspicious day, but also on every other day. It should be remembered that there are always less privileged people than ourselves who need our help.
