Get there early
If you are planning on watching Sunday’s boat procession on the Chao Phraya River marking His Majesty the King's 83rd birthday, get there early. It’s going to be an impressive show and the crowds are likely to be huge.
The river will be “ablaze” with colour says today’s Bangkok Post. Nearly 600 boats, most of them decked with colourful lights, will pass by Siriraj pier from 7.29pm as part of the grand birthday celebrations.
A total of 555 boats from provinces along the Chao Phraya River with 32,570 well-wishers on board have been registered with the Interior Ministry to take part in the celebrations, the acting permanent secretary for the interior, Khwanchai Wongnitikorn, said yesterday.
Government agencies, including the Tourism Authority of Thailand, have prepared 33 boats for the event. Illuminated boats from some northeastern provinces will also take part.
The boats will sail in procession along the portion of the Chao Phraya River from Pin Klao Bridge to the Royal Thai Navy Convention Hall. Rehearsals will be held today and tomorrow, he said.
The ministry has asked government agencies located along the Chao Phraya, such as the Council of State, Thammasat University and the Navy Dockyard, to open their compounds so members of the public can view the procession. People are being advised to find vantage points from 5pm.
Ayutthaya deputy governor Narong Onsa-ard said the province would send 15 large boats – a main vessel decorated with colourful lights, and 14 others carrying well-wishers.
At least 3,000 lights have been used to decorate the 30-metre main boat with images of ancient temples forming a background and a large image of His Majesty the King waving to his subjects.
Nakhon Phanom deputy governor Yongyuth Nukitrangsan said his province had prepared a 60-metre-long, colourfully illuminated boat. The craft bearing a carved wooden figure of two intertwined nagas (mythical serpents) is decorated with 8,484 light bulbs.
