F1 thrills Bangkok

Mark Webber, Formula 1 racing driver for the world-champion Red Bull team, arrived in Bangkok on Friday, a day before his scheduled 3-lap run on Ratchadamneon Klang Avenue around the Democracy Monument area.

Within hours, he and other team members were at Siriraj Hospital, signing a get-well book for His Majesty the King.

This was no ordinary visit, however. At 6 pm the King himself arrived to take a look at Webber’s RB26 racing car. His Majesty took a keen interest in the car, spending almost an hour chatting with Webber about the technology that went in it and about F1 racing in general.

According to Chalerm Yoowittaya, president of Red Bull Beverage Company, the King was interested in which countries held F1 racing competitions. He also wanted details about the car engine, asking about its type and size.

The King also asked Webber about his racing suit. Webber said it was designed to protect against fire, but it was very hot under racing conditions.

Saturday’s show drew huge crowds. Ratchadamnoen Klang was too slippery and the crowds were packed too close to the road for Webber to drive his car anywhere near F1 speed, but his four-lap stint impressed everyone nevertheless. Webber ended his performance by mounting his car and holding the Thai flag above his head.

The red-bull drifting team was equally impressive, appearing to come dangerously near the crowd at they took their turns.

Before the automobile excitement, there was also a parade, featuring jazz and rock music and marchers of all types. Webber, too, took part by standing on one float and waving to the crowd.
