3 die, 2 injured in fireworks ‘factory’ blast
SUNTHORN PONGPAO
AYUTTHAYA: A powerful blast destroyed a house that was being used as an illegal firecracker factory, leaving three people dead and two others injured.
The explosion occurred at about 9am Thursday when workers were transferring firecrackers from the house to a pickup truck in tambon Ban Koh of Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya district.
The blast sparked a fire that raged through three houses in the area.
Later in the day Ayutthaya governor Witthaya Piewpong and senior police inspected the scene.
The governor said the house where the blast occurred produced various types of fireworks illegally.
Several houses in tambon Ban Koh in Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya district have been found making fireworks in the past without permission. Only a few fireworks factories have been granted operating permits.
He believed local leaders were fully aware of illegal fireworks production in their areas, but they chose not to report it to provincial authorities.
He threatened to take action against local leaders found to be negligent in their duties.
He said it was not the first time fireworks had gone off accidentally in tambon Ban Koh. In 2004, 13 people were killed in explosions at a fireworks factory there.
