Road rage suspect

Police now have a suspect in the shooting last week of an airline pilot near Suvarnabhumi airport in what they believe was a fit of road rage. (See

They say he is a 26-year-old Petchabun man who had borrowed a white Toyota Fortuner from the brother of his wife, who lives in Chachoengsao.

Police found the vehicle in Chachoengsao's Ban Pho district and are carrying out forensic tests, looking for traces of gunpowder which might have been left in the car.

An examination of the car yesterday found its registration plate had been replaced with that of another car, but the change was done in a hurry, said Forensic Crime Detection Division chief Jaramporn Suramani.

They found spent 9mm cartridges at the scene of the shooting. The cartridges were stamped "Royal Thai Army".

Pol Lt Gen Jaramporn said the words did not mean the bullets belonged to soldiers. People who practise shooting or were members of shooting ranges run by army units could possess them, he said.

The suspect’s wife has allegedly admitted to police her husband was "touchy and easily provoked", saying the shooting was likely the result of his short temper.

Police still have to question the suspect himself, however. If he does not confess, they may need more evidence since there were no eyewitnesses to the crime apart from the airline pilot who did not get a clear view of his assailant.

You might recall that the injured man is Thai Airways International flight captain Poolwit Ruengdech who was driving his car to the airport when he had what seemed to be a minor incident with a white Toyota Fortuner.

Police speculate the driver of the Fortuner was angered when Lt Poolwit flashed his headlights to alert him that he had his headlights on high beam.
