(Video and text) Yingluck Shinawatra discusses her background and qualifications for the prime ministerial job, the role of Thaksin and what she would do if she gets the job.

Here is text of the Arglit Boonyai’s English language interview with Yingluck Shinawatra. She is not a native speaker of English, so her language is not perfect, but it is still very understandable. I have changed some of the wording to make it more natural, but I have tried to stay as close to the original language as possible.  You can also find an earlier English language interview with her main rival for prime minister, Abhisit Vejjajiva, here: http://bit.ly/lMie7X

Yingluck’s English language interview.

You are the first serious prime ministerial candidate that is a female in Thailand. Do you think with the stability of the political situation as it is right now that Thailand is, in fact, ready for a female prime minister?

Oh really? I think Thailand will (? unclear) whoever can solve the country’s problems, I think.

Right, so you think – a lot of people have been talking about (how) your femininity will help sway voters at the polls and make them want to vote for you in this upcoming election. You don’t think that will have anything to do with it?

I think, first of all, I’m glad to hear that but I know that all women in Thailand have a lot of ability, but, for myself, I will use my – as a female in this situation to talk and have a two-way dialogue with any others so as to make sure that the country moves forward towards peace.

Right, OK, and, given that, and that you’re somewhat lacking in political experience, as compared to your main opposition in the Democrats, what makes you think that you’re a contender this time, that you have the political clout to win the election?

I think if you know my background so I think in my family most of the people came from politicians, like my Dad, my sister, my brother, so in terms of understanding politics, I think – I believe I’ve had that since I was young. The only thing is that I never joined politics officially, but I think I understand.  And I think right now, the country needs people to manage and to deliver policies to enhance the wealth of the country.  So I think at this time the country needs that skill. So that’s why I’ve proposed myself.

Arglit Boonyai

So, talking just now, you referred to management style. Now your brother has been vocal in saying that you’re his clone and that you will have a similar management style to him. Do you have any response to this? Do you agree?

I think I’m a clone in terms of thinking – logical thinking.  Because since I was young – so we are like brother and sister. This is a fact. But the thing is that I worked in the company, so I understand and I see how he implemented the vision and the strategy and made the company successful.  So this I have learned and understood the logic.  Plus, politics – I think the political (side of me) was from being born in a politician’s family. I think that you cannot avoid – if people give you the good idea, so why would you reject that? Whatever is good for the country, we should accept. But, anyway, in terms of leadership and management, it will be on my own to make the decisions because for myself and the Phue Thai part, we have the management, the policies and the commitment to the people, so we have our own organisation to make decisions. Back to Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, he can give us suggestions, but we have the organisation  to make decisions.

Are you worried that some people may not see it that way? That they’ll think that former prime minister Thaksin is, in fact, pushing you to do certain things in his style? How will you differentiate yourself from him and come out from behind his shadow?

I understand only the logical thinking, but the style will be my style.

OK, I have one question to ask that there’s been some rumours going around that you are not if fact Thaksin’s younger sister but maybe a cousin or some other relative from the family.

Oh really?

Is there any truth to these rumours?

I can show my bio, I think. I’m the youngest.

It’s not going to be like Obama, we’re not going to be chasing…

You can check. You can check with the registrar.

OK, now going back to politics for a minute, you’ve been quoted as saying in some of your policies that you will start a new war on drugs, eradicate drugs in twelve months and also a war on poverty in you will hope to eliminate poverty from the country within, I think four years.

Do you think these are really realistic targets? Do you think you can really get rid of drugs in…

Yes, of course. I think we will work with a team and most of the team will come from the team who has already been successful in the past, so I believe this is something we can implement.

How specifically will you do it?

For the drugs, I think instead of counting how many people to handle it, we have to have a strategy with drugs, how we can make sure we follow it strictly. We will bring in the old paradigm and, as for people who take drugs, we think we have to take care of them and help them and educate them and help them return to normal society. As for people who sell the drugs, I think we have to have to take action and make sure it won’t happen again.

This time is a good opportunity with the election that we will turn Thailand to real democracy, so please give me the chance and opportunity so people will be the ones who judge me.
