(Sunday update) Navy to the rescue

Level switch:
- +

To the cheers of crowds on both sides of the Chao Phraya, a navy lead team first raised, then salvaged the sunken barge that had caused so much damage.

Sunday evening update: The navy plan outlined last Thursday (see first story) seems to have worked extremely well.

Sunken sugar barge salvaged

The sugar barge that sank into the Chao Phraya River in Ayutthaya province on May 31 was successfully salvaged on Sunday after 12 days in the water.

The sunken barge was lifted to the surface of the water with pontoons by crewmen from the navy.

The barge was then hauled by six boats about 500m to another spot where it was successfully salvaged.

The operation was watched by cheering crowds on both sides of the river.

The barge, BM 6, of Alpha Marine Supply Co, carrying 2,400 tonnes of  sugar accidentally hit a pillar of a bridge and sank into the Chao Phraya River in tambon Phu Khao Thong of Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya district on May 31.

The dissolved sugar caused heavy pollution to the river water, killing a large quantity of aquatic animals.

The sunken boat blocked the waterway, causing the water currents to erode a river bank and damage four or five riverside homes.

Army officers put up wooden posts along the river bank to reduce erosion caused by a sunken sugar barge in Ayutthaya. More sandbags were dropped into the river near the boat to stem changes in the water flow. TAWATCHAI KEMGUMNERD

Notice that there is a lot of passive voice in the story, especially in the description of the Navy's plan to lift the barge.

Plan to remove the sunken barge

Efforts to remove that sunken barge from the Chao Phraya River in Ayutthaya have not been a success.
It is still there, causing major problems for people living along the river banks and for state officials trying to remove it.

The barge, owned by Alpha Marine Supply Co, was carrying 2,400 tonnes of brown sugar and was on the way to Bangkok when it hit a bridge and capsized.

The sinking has caused serious river pollution. The barge has blocked the waterway and caused severe soil erosion affecting families on the river bank.

Local authorities have tried unsuccessfully over the past week to find a way to extricate the barge and now the navy is being called in to help.

Rear Admiral Suraphong Umnakkhasoradet, a naval specialist who is involved in the operation, says they have a plan that should work.

First, a number of sheet piles are to be driven into the bed of the river to slow the current so that naval divers can go down to work.

The presence of the barge in the water has caused a whirlpool which has been a major obstacle to the naval diving team, said Rear Adm Suraphong.

The sheet piles are to be driven side by side into an area of the river upstream near where the sunken sugar barge lies.

After the sheet piles are put in place, four pier-like metal pontoons will then be sunk and placed beneath the barge. Air will then be pumped into the pontoons to lift the barge. A number of capsule-shaped balloons will also be placed beneath the barge and inflated to make the barge float.

Each pontoon can lift an object weighing between 100 and 200 tonnes.
