Not a “hit-and-run” colonel insists

Public interest in the alleged hit-and-run incident that has left a female doctor in a coma has turned to anger after the man suspected of driving the car yesterday blamed her for whole thing.

The army colonel implicated in the hit-and-run has told police that she injured herself by jumping on to his car as he drove away.

Maj Hathaiporn Imwitthaya, 34, sustained severe head injuries when she was reportedly struck by a Nissan car outside her home on Set Siri Road in Phaya Thai district on June 11.

In his preliminary statement at Phaya Thai police station yesterday  Col Saksit Phuklam, 51, said the doctor was hurt after she jumped on to his car as he drove away following an argument over a parking space.
He said he and his family were returning from dinner at a nearby restaurant when he found his car had been blocked in by Maj Hathaiporn's car.

He said they had argued over the parking space before Maj Hathaiporn moved her car, but when he was about to drive away, the doctor walked up to his vehicle and pounded on it.

Col Saksit said when he again went to drive away, the doctor climbed on to the car's bonnet and pulled a windscreen wiper off.

He said he abruptly drove backward, causing Maj Hathaiporn to fall down.

Col Saksit said he did not hit her with his car and had no intention of doing so.

However, Maj Hathaiporn's mother, Pannakorn Imwitthaya, insisted that the incident was a deliberate hit-and-run attack and said her daughter had not argued with Col Saksit.

Her account appears to be supported by footage from a surveillance camera taken the night of the incident.  The video has been posted to youtube and that is a big reason people have become angry. They also suspect police are dragging their feet because an influential military officer is involved.
