Truly awful
It was an awful story of cruelty to animals.
Thai police on Thursday stopped a six-wheeled truck on a road in Nakhon Phanom's Na Thom district near the border with Laos.
It was discovered to be transporting about 600 live dogs in cramped cages.
A little while later another six-wheeler was intercepted carrying about 1,200 live dogs in nearby Si Songkhram district.
Police seized the dogs and trucks and detained three suspects – two Thais and a Vietnamese.
The dogs were being transported to Vietnam to be butchered for human consumption.
The rescued dogs are being treated at the Nakhon Phanom Animal Quarantine Station. All of them were fatigued and weakened and many were wounded.
Some succumbed to the terrible conditions during trafficking and died. Livestock officials were seen carrying dead dogs for burial yesterday.
Earlier, 119 of the dogs had died both through suffocation in the cramped cages or when they were thrown from the back of the trucks as the alleged traffickers sped away from officers, says an official of the Livestock Development Department.
Police on Saturday filed six charges against the three suspects.
The charges range from illegal transport of animals, unlicensed trade in animals, the transport of dogs to an area under rabies monitoring, cruelty to animals, not having dogs vaccinated and lacking documents to certify their vaccination.
