Nurse’s helper

Someday, in the not too distant future, you might be in a hospital lift on your way to visit a sick friend, when the door opens and in rolls a robot.

The robot, named Hospi, may even accompany you to your friend's room since its job is to deliver medication.

Hospi is a nurse’s helper, designed to pick up medications and deliver them to patients’ rooms quickly, accurately and safely.

Gary Tan, the strategic management manager at Panasonic Systems Asia Pacific, said Hospi could pick up medications, including fragile vials, arrange them on a tray and deliver them within a hospital, all independently.

The multiple sensors – four laser range finders and 27 ultrasonic sensors – inside Hospi help it navigate the lengthy hallways of a hospital and enable it to avoid bumping into patients and even to get in and out off lifts without human help.

Panasonic says the Hospi robot is already in full use at Matsushita hospital in Japan and also serves hospitals in Singapore. The company showed off Hopsi at the Panasonic booth at Medical Fair Asia, Thailand 2011 last week and plans to introduce it to local hospitals.
Adapted from a story in today’s Bangkok Post and from Internet sources. You can see Hospi in action in the video below. If you are in a hurry, skip to the last minute of the video to see the robot “walk” around.
