No hit and run here

Photo and story by Thomas F. Tessier

One day, while travelling through Chiang Mai, I was sitting at a coffee shop near the Tha Phae Gate when I suddenly heard a loud noise. As I looked out the shop window I could see that a motorbike had run a red light and smashed into the side of a vacant samlor taxi.

Both of the samlor's rear wheels were completely destroyed and needed to be repaired. Surprisingly, though, the owner of the samlor taxi and the motorbike driver talked calmly to each other and before long, two new wheels – complete with new tyres – were delivered on-site.

Amusingly, the samlor owner casually finished eating his meal before fixing everything like new. But what was most impressive was the calm manner in which everything was handled.

The motorbike driver bowed many times, repeatedly saying how sorry he was and that he would buy new parts for the repairs. Then after the repairs were made, the owner of the samlor taxi rode off looking for new customers.
