Khlong Prapa scare

Early this morning residents in the Chaeng Wattana area were given a scare when water started overflowing  the Khlong Prapa canal which supplies raw water for the Metropolitan Waterworks Authority (MWA).

Many began gathering their belongings to take to higher ground believing the great flood of Bangkok might have begun.

A concerned-looking prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra was on the scene hours later trying to find out what happened.

This morning Bangkok governor Sukhumbhand Paribatra said floodwaters which surged into Khlong Prapa and also overflowed into Rama 6 road was caused by an out-of-order watergate of the MWA.

The BMA had helped fix the watergate and drained water out into nearby canals, he said.

The government's Flood Relief Operations Centre (FROC) on Thursday issued a statement that the MWA had asked for assistance from the Armed Forces Development Command to stop the flow of floodwaters into Khlong Prapa.

FROC spokesman Wim Rungwattanachinda said the BMA's Drainage and Sewerage Department had also pumped water into Khlong Sam Sen, Khlong Bang Khen and Khlong Bang Sue to reduce the amount of water in Khlong Prapa.

MWA governor Charoen Passara said what happened would not affect the agency's tap water production and quality.

He said the floodwaters that surged into Khlong Prapa late last night were from Thammasat University's Rangsit campus and Nava Nakorn Industrial Estate.
