While the rest of Nonthaburi province has been inundated under as much as two metres of water, Pak Kret has remained largely dry. Why?
Pak Kret district of Nonthaburi remains dry despite heavy flooding in surrounding areas thanks to its strong, well-built dykes, including this one near Wat Koo temple. THITI WANNAMONTHA
Pak Kret stays dry
One of the riverside districts in the Bangkok area that was expected to be severely flooded was Pak Kret district of Nonthaburi.
But while the rest of the province has been inundated under as much as two metres of water, Pak Kret has remained largely dry.
The reason, says Pak Kret mayor Wichai Bandasak, is good preparation and unity among residents.
Mayor Wichai said Pak Kret remained dry because its flood prevention had been planned since June when many other provinces upstream of the Chao Phraya River had started to suffer from floods.
He said the dykes that protect Pak Kret are up to five metres high.
There are dykes that face the river, next to Pathum Thani province, Khlong Prapa canal and many local canals.
The dykes are guarded around the clock and backhoes were put on standby for swift maintenance.
The Pak Kret municipality also paid the neighbouring Tambon Ban Mai Administrative Organisation to build a dyke there to help protect Pak Kret.
A key element that has helped the district survive floodwater is the cooperation of local people, Mr Wichai said.
"Flood prevention for Pak Kret depends not only on money but also on the unity of local people. All of them learned a lesson from the flood in 1995," Mr Wichai said.
"Initially people disagreed. The municipality asked monks to convince them of possible negative effects. If everyone joins forces to keep some areas dry, it can offer help to other areas.
"Monks from all temples in the Pak Kret municipality encouraged volunteers to make sandbags. When people saw monks making sandbags, they then helped the monks. Finally all people took part in protecting Pak Kret."
