MP Khanchit surrenders to face murder charges

Samut Sakhon Democrat MP Khanchit Thapsuwan turns himself in to police in Nakhon Pathom province yesterday. TAWEEPOL LIMCHAISUWAN

Democrat MP Khanchit Thapsuwan has turned himself in to police to face a charge of premeditated murder.

The Samut Sakhon MP is accused of shooting Samut Sakhon Provincial Administration Organisation president Udon Kraiwatnussorn eight times in the head with a .40 pistol in a toilet at a PTT petrol station in Muang district.

Monthon Kraiwatnussorn, the father of the victim, was a Pheu Thai candidate in the last election, leading to speculation the killing was politically motivated.

An arrest warrant was issued and yesterday Mr Khanchit, 41, accompanied by Democrat MP for Phatthalung Nipit Intarasombat and a team of lawyers, arrived at the headquarters of Provincial Police Region 7 amid tight security.

Mr Khanchit told reporters that he denied all charges but wanted to show his innocence, so he turned himself in to police.

He would give his statement only to a court.

Pol Gen Pansiri Praphawat said the .40 pistol used for the murder was the same type of pistol Mr Khanchit bought under the  parliament's welfare scheme. However, police have yet to check Mr Khanchit's pistol.

Police are checking bullet shells from a shooting range where Mr Khanchit is a member to compare them with shells found at the murder scene.

Mr Khanchit was not detained because, as a member of parliament, he has immunity while parliament is in session.  That can be revoked however by a vote of House members.

House Speaker Somsak Kiatsuranon, said yesterday parliament would not normally allow an MP to be detained by police while the House was still in session.

However, once he received a request from police, he would put it on the House's urgent agenda the following day.

"I will take action according to the constitution and relevant laws," said Mr Somsak.
