Knickers nicker nicked
Headline writers love stories about women's underwear. Today's front-page of the Bangkok Post provides a perfect example why. Here's how it begins:
"Safe-cracking knickers nicker nicked by city coppers,"
The first paragraph provides a translation in plain English:
A burglar (a nicker) nabbed (nicked, i.e., was arrested) for stealing money from a safe (safe-cracking) has also been found to be an avid collector of women's underwear (knickers).
"City coppers", of course, are city police. On Tuesday night they arrested Danai Raiwet, 48,and Wasan Wiriya, 32, near Soi Chaloem Khet 1 in the Phlap Phla Chai area for allegedly breaking into Metro Praken 2001 Limited on Soi Chaloem Khet 2 and making off with 401,000 baht from the safe.
The two men are also suspected in the theft of one million baht in cash and 10 gold-edged Buddhist amulets from a private company, investigators say.
It was a visit to Mr Danai's home, however, that made this case an unusual one. There, police found several thousand items of stolen women's underwear, both washed and unwashed.
Yesterday, Mr Danai told reporters that he had been stealing women's underwear since he was 18, in addition to swiping valuables and cash in burglaries of houses and companies.
"He sniffed them all the time even while driving," Pol Maj Gen Saroj Promcharoen explained.
Mr Danai will be charged with stealing valuables and cash, though not the underwear offence since no one has come forward to lay a complaint, police said.
