Former sweet troopers hit the streets
Since the start of this week, motorists in central Bangkok might be thinking traffic police in the capital are much sweeter and friendlier than before.
That is where a group of 18 female officers from the Metropolitan Police Bureau have been keeping traffic flowing since Monday.
The women were formerly members of the so-called Sweet Troop, or Kong Roi Namwan – female police providing security for VIPs.
However, when the Metropolitan Police Bureau decided to set up a unit of traffic policewomen, some of the sweet troopers decided to apply.
One of them is Pol Cpl Atchalee Sirichan, 26, who said she is determined to be an excellent traffic police officer.
While her male peers are seen as tough and stern law enforcement officers, the young officer says she will keep smiling at motorists and keep traffic moving on the roads.
Nevertheless, she will have her ticket book out for those who violate traffic laws. "We've all had plenty of practice writing out tickets," she said.
Pol Cpl Sunitthaka Laithaisong, 25, said it has been fun meeting people on the streets. She is also a former Sweet Troop member and says she did not get many opportunities to interact with people while in the troop. That's all changed now.
"Several motorists have stopped their vehicles to watch me work, or just to say hello," she said.
Her colleague, Pol Cpl Wichittra Saengsi, 25, believes policewomen can help ease the stress felt by many motorists on Bangkok's congested roads.
"Women police on the streets is something new to many motorists. But as far as traffic problems are concerned they can be eased if all motorists abide by traffic laws," she said.
Motorists thinking about slipping some cash to any of these women to avoid getting a ticket should think again.
Although many of their male colleagues have been accused of taking bribes, this will not be the case with these women, Pol Cpl Wichittra says. If any are found to have taken a bribe, they will be fired on the spot, she said.
