Here on Ekamai (Sukhumivit Soi 63) at about 2pm I was just about to leave for the office when I heard what I thought was a loud explosion. My wife, who had just come in from outside, assured me it was just thunder, so I didn't think much of it.
When I arrived at the office a short time later, I found it was indeed an explosion, one of the three explosions that have been the centre of attention since they went off.
Initial reports, spread through twitter, suggested it might have been a failed suicide bomb plot involving Lebanese.
We now know otherwise. The first explosion went off at a house on Soi Pridiphanomyong 31 rented to three men, presumably all Iranian. Shortly afterwards, the three left in a hurry.
One of them tried to stop a taxi and when the driver refused to take him, the man threw a bomb, badly damaging the taxi and injuring the driver.
The man fled until he reached the front of Kasempithaya School on Soi 71 where he apparently became unnerved at the sight of policemen. He threw a bomb, but it apparently bounced off a a passing pickup truck, fell next to him and exploded, blowing off both his legs. Three others, all Thais, were injured in the blasts.
The man has been identified as Saeid Moradi and he is said to be in a very critical condition at Chulalongkorn Hospital.
Thai police also say they may have caught a second Iranian involved in the bombing incidents. His name is Mohammad Hazaei and he was arrested at Suvarnabhumi airport.
There is obviously a lot of speculation surrounding the incident, but let's wait for tomorrow morning when we will, hopefully, have a lot more information.
