Software defects found in tablet PCs
The new tablets were found to have one serious defect for young children – the drag-drop function didn't work CHANAT KATANYU
One of the joys of tablet computers for little children is how they respond to touch.
Fun things happen when the children touch an object on the screen. Best of all, they can drag objects from one part of the screen and drop them on another.
Apparently, however, that is not the case with one hundred thousand Chinese-made tablet computers acquired under the government’s One Tablet PC Per Child scheme.
A source in the committee overseeing the scheme said the drag-and-drop function does not work in the computers and the software needs to be reinstalled.
The source said the defect was discovered in the 2,000 test devices already in the country.
The Chinese manufacturer was immediately informed about the defect, but by then 100,000 units had already been made, the source said.
Shenzhen Scope Scientific Development Co is required to deliver 400,000 tablets to Thailand on July 10, or within 60 days of the procurement contract signing. If it fails to do so, the company will be fined around 240,000 baht a day.
The source doubts the firm will meet the deadline as the ICT Ministry's examination committee refused to approve the 2,000 units because they failed to meet the specifications set under the contract
