Tablets are fine, ICT minister says, denying media reports of problems

The local media have “messed up” their reporting of the One Tablet Per Child programme, an unhappy Information and Communications Technology Minister Anudith Nakornthap said yesterday.

Reports that the Office of the Basic Education Commission (Obec) is unhappy with the Chinese-made tablets are wrong, he said.

The tablets, manufactured by Chinese supplier Shenzhen Scope Scientific Development, were in line with the agreement signed between the firm and the government.

The tablets are being manufactured and distributed under a state scheme for Prathom 1 students.

The Education Ministry is working on the project with the ICT Ministry and will report any problems, Mr Anudith said, adding that the inspection of the first batch of 2,000 tablets delivered earlier this month was signed by Obec secretary-general Chinnapat Bhumirat.

Referring to an ambiguous safety warning identified on the battery charger, he said a correction has now been made, taking care of the problem.

He said the tablets also had a warranty and children would receive substitute tablets while repairs are made if their units turn out to be faulty. Under the One Tablet per Child programme, the government will provide all Prathom 1 students with tablets.

All 400,000 tablets are expected to be delivered by Aug 18.
