Princess names two special birds
Two birds at Nakhon Ratchasima Zoo are so special they received their names from Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn.
The birds are cranes, both bred locally as part of the zoo's crane breeding project.
The two birds, male and female, were born two days apart in August last year.
Princess Sirindhorn saw the two cranes during an agricultural exhibition last year. Zoo officials asked her to name the two birds.
And she did. She bestowed the name ‘‘ Long Lom’’ (wind traveller) on the male crane, and ‘‘ Chom Fah’’ (sky watcher) on the female bird.
The breeding programme was initiated in 1989 after the zoo received a pair of cranes to boost the numbers of the bird.
The project has overseen the reproduction of more than 200 cranes, specially reared in a semi-wild environment before being released into the wild. So far 26 birds have been released to the wild.
Long Lom and Chom Fah have been chosen to showcase the zoo’s breeding programme and raise awareness about the bird and its importance to the ecosystem.
