Party time at Bang Kwang

Internet viewers around the world are getting a brief one-minute look at life inside Bangkok’s Bang Kwang Central Prison.

Secretly filmed by an American inmate identified only as Jeffrey, the video clip shows drug use and "other illegal activities". One Nigerian prisoner has even set a small fire to burn his letters.

No prison guards are in sight.

Jeffrey managed to send the video clip out of the prison and it was posted on British-based on Wednesday.

Correction officials, who yesterday admitted the video is authentic, are not amused.

Pol Col Suchart Wongananchai, the department’s director-general, said authorities investigating the release of the clip had questioned Jeffrey and the Nigerian, whose name was not disclosed.

Jeffrey allegedly admitted that he recorded the video himself and it was filmed in October, 2010. He then sent the clip to an American friend and had no idea how it appeared on the LiveLeak website.

Prison authorities have downgraded the two inmates to a “very bad” level. A committee has also been set up to investigate why inmates were allowed to make a fire and commit illegal activities.

“When the incident occurred, I was not yet in the position of the Corrections Department director-general. At that time, no crackdown policy on narcotics and other prohibited items, especially mobile phones, had been put in place," Pol Col Suchart said.

Adapted from an online story on the Bangkok Post website. For the moment at least, the link to the video can be found here:
