Suvarnabhumi a two-runway airport again as repairs finish early
Somchai: Eastern runway opens today.
Suvarnabhumi airport's eastern runway will open for business at noon today, ten days ahead of schedule, says airport general manager Somchai Sawasdeepon.
A 1.62-kilometre section of the 4km-long runway was closed on June 11 for maintenance work which had been expected to take until August 9.
The section needed maintenance to repair the wear and tear of withstanding 80% of the takeoffs and landings at the airport.
The Civil Aviation Department is conducting a final check on the section of the runway this morning before it is fully reopened.
The eastern runway's closure had resulted in heavy congestion at the two-runway airport.
The airport has been open six years. No further repair projects at Suvarnabhumi airport are slated for the time being, Mr Somchai added.
Mr Somchai also plans to introduce ground penetrating radar to check the airport's runways in the future. He said the device would be able to check the runways to a depth of about three metres. Examinations would take place from 2am to 4am during off-peak periods and be finished in a few days.
He said the technique is not complicated and would not require runway closures.
Mr Somchai said he hopes these examinations will end criticism regarding runway safety at Suvarnabhumi airport.
