US Swimmer Phelps becomes top medal winner
Thai athletes moved closer to Olympic medals yesterday after successes in the boxing ring and on the badminton court.

Light flyweight boxer Kaeo Pongprayoon easily defeated Mohamed Flissi of Algeria to move on to the round of 16 at the Olympic tournament early Wednesday.

Kaeo, an amateur veteran, dominated the bout from the start.

Fighting out of the blue corner, he won the first round 7-6, then built on his lead in the second, winning 7-3 in the Olympics point system.

By the end of the bout, Flissi was clearly no match for the Thai, and the final points total was 19-11.

The 32-year-old Kamphaeng Phet veteran next faces little-known Carlos Quipo Pilataxi of Ecuador, who narrowly defeated Jose de la Nieve Linares of Spain 14-11 in the bout immediately before Kaeo's.

The fight is scheduled for 3am on Sunday, Thailand time.

Gold medalist US' Michael Phelps kisses his gold medal after the podium ceremony of the men's 4x200m freestyle relay final during the swimming event at the London 2012 Olympic Games in London. AFP

Meanwhile, the Olympic Games has a new all-time medal winning champion in American swimmer Michael Phelps. In the London 2012 games he has added three medals to his collection, bringing his total to 19, one more than previous record-holder gymnast Larisa Latynina of Russia.

Latynina, now 77 and looking remarkably fit, is in London and she seemed unconcerned about the loss of her record. She had joked in recent weeks that it was time for a man to be able to do what a woman had done long ago.

Phelp’s last medal was gold as a member of the US men's 4x200m freestyle relay team in which he swam the final leg.

"I told those guys I wanted a big lead in the last leg and they gave it to me," Phelps said. "I just wanted to hold on. I just wanted to thank them for allowing me to have this moment."
