Taekwando fighters face tough task
Thailand’s quest for Olympic gold got more difficult yesterday following the taekwondo draw.
All three Thai athletes will now face skilled and experienced opponents.
Unseeded world champion Rangsiya Nisaisom could not have asked for a tougher task as she will face top seed Tseng Li-Cheng of Taiwan in the first round of the women's 57kg.
Third seed Pen-ek Karaket will start his campaign in the men's 58kg against Lee Daehoon of South Korea while Chanatip Sonkham will take on Kristina Kim of Russia in her first bout in the women's 49kg.
Pimol Srivikorn, president of the Taekwondo Association of Thailand (TAT), admitted that it was a difficult assignment for the Thai contingent.
However, he said that he had not expected an easy draw in the tournament as all participants are good.
"Pen-ek lost to the Korean in this year's Asian Championships but he told me that he could beat him in the next meeting," he said.
Pimol said he believed Rangsiya could beat 26-year-old Tseng, the two-time defending Asian champion.
"Tseng is a bit old now," he said.
Chanatip seems to get the easiest draw among the trio but she has been beaten by the Russian twice.
Thailand coach Choi Young Seok of South Korea said that it was tough for his fighters but if they want to become successful at the highest level they have to beat all opponents.
Pen-ek and Chanatip will fight tomorrow while Rangsiya will be in action the following day.
