Ploy blames accountant for tax problem
Actress Chermarn "Ploy" Boonyasak is not getting a lot of public sympathy for her tax problems.
Local social networks have been full of lively discussions on the subject which many see as an attempt by a highly-paid entertainer to avoid paying her tax bill in full.
"I feel like I am being taken advantage of," one netizen wrote. "An entertainer (Ploy) can work for one to two hours and get a hundred thousand baht. Yet, you try to avoid paying taxes or reduce the amount you owe. How about ordinary people who have to wake up early, come back home to take care of a family, have a bit of time to watch the soap you star in, then wake up early to go to work again? All to earn a fraction of the money (you earned)."
Ploy made waves last week after she was accused by an event organising company of using another person's ID to register her income for withholding tax.
She didn’t help her public image when she then gave an interview claiming she had had a "cosy" relationship with the Revenue Department.
Revenue Department director-general Sathit Rangkasiri quickly shot that claim down, saying she could be prosecuted for committing tax fraud if the allegation against her is proven true.
Yesterday, a tearful Ploy held a press conference, saying everything was the fault of her office's accounting unit.
She said the tax filing problems have been rectified and her tax record is now back under her own name.
She insisted she is ready to cooperate with the Revenue Department.
She apologised for having made strong comments in response to the tax problems. She said she was trying to protect her manager against accusations of embezzlement.
"I'm very sorry for the remarks I made," Ploy said. Is that the end of the story? Wait and see.
