Banknote mystery
According to Ms Chuenjai Boradi, president of the Phichai Rak community in Udon Thani city, yesterday’s garbage cleanup was supposed to be just another community service activity. She had called for residents to help clean the local roadside areas as they do once each month. What they found, however, quickly became a story for national newspapers and television.
While the residents were doing their cleanup next to Udon Pichairak school, they found a green plastic bag next to a garbage container. As they put in the container, it ripped open, revealing a large mass of shredded green paper. It looked suspiciously like banknotes, but they couldn’t be completely sure, so they called other residents to take a look. All were agreed that it was indeed shredded money, so they called police to investigate.
Police Caption Wisanu Pimpote of the Muang Udon Thani police station said that a close inspection revealed that it was a mix of 20 baht and 100 baht notes, possibly totaling as much as 500,000 baht. He said it was impossible for him to determine if the money was real or counterfeit and was having the shredded paper sent for further examination.
According to television reports this morning, however, the mystery has been solved. The paper is from real banknotes that were taken out of circulation and shredded several years ago. The owner is a former national bank official who had asked to keep a portion of the shredded money. Apparently a house maid thought it was waste paper and took it out to the garbage container.
