Mr Thaksin may meet the president of the country when he visits Myanmar, but his supporters are far more interested in his visit to Tachilek, just a few steps across the border from Chiang Rai.
Ousted prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra was greeted by thousands of his Thai supporters during his visit to Laos last April. He can expect a similar welcome during his upcoming visit to Tachilek, Burma, just across the border from Chiang Rai. PATTANAPONG HIRUNARD
Excitement grows for Thaksin’s Tachilek visit
Fugitive former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra is scheduled to visit Myanmar in the second week of November, his legal adviser Noppadon Pattama confirmed on Thursday.
During the visit, Thaksin is due to meet important people in the Burmese government, very possibly the president, but the highlight for his supporters here in Thailand, will be his stay in the Burmese town of Tachilek, opposite Thailand's Chiang Rai province.
Mr Noppadon said Mr Thaksin is expected to stay in Tachilek for a few days to make merit and meet red-shirt supporters and Pheu Thai MPs
Last April, thousands of his supporters from Thailand's Northeast crossed the border into Laos when the ousted premier made a visit there.
Now, the visit to Tachilek gives his northern supporters easy access to their hero. Mr Thaksin, after all, is a native of Chiang Mai.
Hotel rooms in Tachilek township are reportedly filling up in anticipation of the visit.
It is not just the North that will be represented, however. Anant Sriphan, a Pheu Thai MP for Udon Thani, said he and 10 other MPs would meet Thaksin in Tachilek.
Many more MPs are expected to make the trip to Myanmar, he added. Among them are likely to be Pheu Thai’s eight MPs from Nakhon Ratchasima.
One of them, Suchart Pinyo, said on Thursday that more than 400 red-shirts in the province’s Kaeng Sanam Nang and Ban Luam districts had expressed their intention to visit Mr Thaksin in Myanmar.
Many more red-shirts from the other 32 districts in the province also planned to travel to Tachilek by personal car, van and bus, Mr Suchart said.
They would take with them two special dishes to offer to Thaksin – the famous Tha Chang roasted chicken and Wat Dong Moon Lek noodles, which are his favourites, the MP said.
