Queen Elizabeth II meets PM Yingluck

Royalty and diplomacy were very much in the news yesterday in reports coming out of London.

First, it was officially announced that US President Barack Obama will be granted an audience with His Majesty the King on Sunday during his official trip to Thailand.

The King, who is staying at Siriraj Hospital, has allowed for the special greeting, which is scheduled to take place at 5pm before the US leader meets Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra on the same day, Foreign Minister Surapong Tovichakchaikul said from London.

He is accompanying Ms Yingluck on her official visit to the United Kingdom.

In London, Buckingham Palace, the official residence of Queen Elizabeth II, reported that the Queen had granted an audience to the Thai Prime Minister.

The audience had been arranged by British Prime Minister David Cameron to mark the Queen's Diamond Jubilee.

England and Thailand are also celebrating 400 years of trade relations this year, and the embassy in London is among the oldest Thai missions worldwide.

Thai Ambassador to the United Kingdom, Pasan Teparak, said that the prime minister's audience with the Queen was a sign that the Kingdom's international standing was back to normal after the recent political turmoil.

Neither the prime minister's elder brother, former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, nor her predecessor Abhisit Vejjajiva were granted audiences during their officials visits to the United Kingdom.

Meanwhile, in Bangkok, all venues Mr Obama will visit, including Siriraj Hospital and Government House, and the streets he will travel through will be under close watch, police chief Kamronwit Thoopkrachang said.

US security officers will also tail the president by land, as well as by air with a helicopter.

The Royal Thai Air Force, together with its Security Force Command and police officers, will work with US officers to maintain security at Don Mueang airport where Air Force One will land, Royal Thai Air Force spokesman Monthon Satchukon said.
