One school that will have difficulty reopening today is Bang Maruat School in Panare district of Pattani province. A building was burned down late last week by suspected insurgents, causing the loss of eight classrooms, 20 desktop computers, 80 new tablet computers and other teaching equipment. ABDULLOH BENJAKAT

Breaking news: A number of armed militants set fire on Ban Thasu School in Panare district of Pattani province early Monday morning, damaging one room, reports said.

Police said the incident occurred at about 1.45am when a group of 15-20 armed men in black went into the school, tied up a temporary employee, set fire to the two-storey school building before fleeing.

Anxious Pattani teachers return to classes today

When Nanthana Kaewchan, 51, the director of Ban Tha Kam Sam School in Pattani's Nong Chik district , was shot and killed last Thursday, local teachers decided drastic action was needed.

Nanthana was the 155th teacher killed since the southern violence flared in 2004 and there were no signs that her killing would be the last.

The Confederation of Teachers of Southern Border Provinces (CTSB) quickly announced the closure of 332 schools in Pattani to pressure for a review of security measures.

Just how bad the security situation had become became clear when army chief Prayuth Chan-ocha proposed that teachers stay overnight at their schools.

Security agencies have tried their best to provide safety for teachers, but the attacks continue, Gen Prayuth said last week.

The teachers, however, wanted a whole range of changes from the government, including improved welfare benefits such as increased hazard pay and compensation for families of teachers affected by violent incidents involving southern militants.

Confederation representatives met with Education Minister Pongthep Thepkanchana over the weekend who promised their demands would be met as soon as possible.

His assurances were apparently convincing and the Pattani schools are reopening today under even tighter security that was in place before.
