ATMs in the news
Just before the New Year, customers of the Khiri Mat branch of the Government Savings Bank (GSB) discovered an ATM machine at the front of the district office which appeared to be in the proper holiday spirit.
Residents said the machine started dispensing twice the money customers had requested, without debiting their accounts for the excess amount.
Not surprisingly, on hearing the news, bank customers rushed to take out money before the bonanza dried up.
It was not known how much money the bank lost from the generous machine in an incident seen by many as an unexpected windfall or even a New Year gift.
Nuanprang Krongtanin, director of the GSB's Sukhothai area office, said bank staff found and fixed a software glitch, and the ATM was able to be brought back online last Friday.
Ms Nuanprang said one honest customer notified the branch manager that he had received 20,000 baht from the machine after keying in 10,000 baht. The bank then disabled the machine.
The other customers will be required to return their free gifts too, she said. The bank will use security camera footage to identify them.
Several days later, thieves discovered another ATM was downright stingy. They had ripped the machine from its mooring in front of a restaurant in Lat Lum Kaeo district of Pathum Thani early Monday morning, but despite their best efforts could not open it and had to flee empty handed.
Thieves completely ripped apart an ATM near a Lat Lum Kaeo restaurant but were unable to remove its cash box. PONGPAT WONGYALA
Police called to the scene found the heavily damaged ATM left on the road about five metres from its former position. Security cameras at the restaurant, and the ATM’s own camera, were sprayed with paint.
The offenders tried to pry open the ATM to remove the cash box, which had around two million baht in it, but their best efforts failed.
