During the Songkran period our Bangkok Post photographers have been out and about braving the man-made deluge to send back hundreds of high-quality photos of the festivities. The newspaper itself only has space to publish a small fraction of them, but our internet section has fewer limitations. I have published a large number of Songkran photos on our Bangkok Post learning Facebook page, but I thought it would also be nice to post a collection of photos right here on our webpage. Let’s get started.
The biggest concern throughout the holiday period is the safety of people on the roads. Thus, highway police are even busier than they normally are, taking on new duties to keep motorists alert. AMNAT THONGDEE
For impatient children, the travel time back to the provinces can be agonisingly slow. The “Are we there yet?” questions can begin before the train leaves the station. PATIPAT JANTHONG
The northern city of Chiang Mai is one of the first areas to begin serious water battles and the last to finish them. THITI WANNAMONTHA
Ayuthaya is not far behind and there heavy weaponry makes the battles even more exciting. SUNTHORN PONGPAO
Water-throwing may dominate the photos, but there are many traditional activities as well. Here, Buddhist devotees pour water on Phra Buddha Sihing, one of Chiang Mai's most revered statues. THITI WANNAMONTHA
Songkran activities can be long-lasting and it is a bit much for some participants. THITI WANNAMONTHA
Sweet-smelling powder is everywhere during Songkran and people who venture out usually end up with quite a bit on their faces and elsewhere. Some accept this willingly; others are a bit reluctant. Photos clockwise from top left by Apichit Jinakul, Amnart Thongdee, Pattarapong Chatpattarasil (2 photos.)
Nothing, it seems, can escape the white stuff. PATIPAT JANTHONG.
A good term to describe some Songkran revellers might be “target”. Something in the way they dress or the way they act clearly indicates they expect to be drenched by anyone in sight. Here is one “target” in Chiang Mai. THITI WANNAMONTHA
Here’s a group of targets. Attractive women in the back of a pickup truck will definitely get attention. THITI WANNAMONTHA
Meanwhile, back in Bangkok, a family joins the fun on Khao San road. THANARAK KHOONTON
The wettest, most crowded place in Bangkok during Songkran is probably Silom road. APICHIT JINAKUL.
If you look closely at this photo from the Silom area, you’ll see something was not quite right. Some young men were trying to sell beer. There’s a good chance they were arrested because that is not allowed. APICHIT JINAKUL.
Meanwhile, outside the main water throwing areas, Bangkok residents were rediscovering things they had almost forget existed. Road surfaces, for example. That is what a Bangkok road looks like in its natural state. Really. KOSOL NAKACHOL.
This photo might be entitled “Songkran cute”. PORNPROM SATRABHAYA.
More Songkran cute.
Songkran is fun, but everyday revellers leave a big mess. PATIPAT JANTHONG.
Fortunately, Bangkok has crews of super-cleaners – mainly women. PATIPAT JANTHONG.
Finally, it’s back to Bangkok for the many thousands who enjoyed the holiday at home in the provinces. This group of returnees has that "holiday is over" look on their faces. PATTANAPONG HIRUNARD
