Bomb detector is a fake, British court says

James McCormick

The ADE 651 bomb "detector" is a fake. It doesn't work.

Wikipedia has been saying this for years and now a British court agrees. As a result, the British businessman whose company sold the bogus device to governments around the world is facing jail.

James McCormick, 56, was found guilty of three counts of fraud at London’s Old Bailey court for selling completely ineffective devices based on an American novelty golf ball finder.

McCormick made an estimated £50 million (2.1 billion baht) from sales of his three models.

‘‘The devices did not work and he knew they did not work,’’ prosecutor Richard Whittam told jurors.

‘‘And despite the fact they did not work, people bought them for a handsome but unwarranted profit.’’

McCormick was bailed until his sentencing on May 2.

If the ADE 651 looks familiar, it should. It is virtually identical to the GT 200 and Alpha 6 bomb detectors that were sold in large quantities to Thai government agencies and used extensively in the troubled South.

A promotional video for the device:

Gary Bolton, the British businessman who produced and sold the devices, has also been charged by British authorities with fraud.

Here in Thailand, the National Anti-Corruption Commission last July launched an investigation into the purchase of the two devices which were procured by 11 state agencies on 13 separate occasions.
