Microsoft reveals Xbox One

First of all, Microsoft's new Xbox is not named Xbox 720 as many people were expecting. Instead it's Xbox One.

Secondly, although it looks a bit like the old Xbox, it is very different – so different that you can't play any of the Xbox 360 games that you bought over the past few years. That's right. It's not backward compatible.

It's also not just a gaming system. It's a "home entertainment hub," Xbox developers say – or, as Don Mattrick, head of Microsoft's interactive entertainment business, put it yesterday:  "Today, we put you at the center of a new generation in the living room."

He was speaking at the Xbox One official launch presentation at Microsoft's headquarters in Redmond, Washington.

The console's new hardware and software allows for instant switching between games, television, and Internet browsing, Mattrick said. Skype, purchased by Microsoft two years ago for $8.5 billion, was also integrated for online video calls.

Xbox One will recognise you and understand what you tell it to do, say Microsoft executives. Its highly-refined Kinect motion system will respond instantly to the motions of you and your friends –in some cases, four, or possibly more, of you can play at the same time in the same room.

"This is the beginning of a new generation of games and entertainment and a new generation of smart TV," said Microsoft entertainment unit executive Yusuf Mehdi.

Xbox One consoles, with 8 gigabytes of RAM and a 500 GB hard disk, will be released later this year, according to Mattrick, who did not disclose pricing details.
