Deputy Prime Minister and Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has urged business operators on Khao San Road to forget plans to hold water-splashing activities during Songkran.

He said patience and cooperation are needed to avoid the risk of another coronavirus outbreak.

Bangkok's communicable disease control committee is set to meet later today to consider allowing water-splashing celebrations on Khao San Road over the Thai New Year festival, as was requested by business operators in the area.

The Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) had earlier banned water-splashing and other celebrations associated with the holiday as such activities could increase the risk of contracting Covid-19.

Businesses along Khao San Road, and other cities such as Chiang Mai, Phuket and Pattaya petitioned the government.

Mr Anutin said the ban on water-splashing is necessary to reduce the risk of contagion.

Public health officials had previously warned that new infections could reach 100,000 per day unless precautions are taken during the festival.
