Update (11:30) Residents of the Sai Mai area have been told to evacuate.
Northern run-off hits Sai Mai
Channel 3's Sorayut Suthasanajinda is not someone you can keep in the studio during a natural disaster like a flood. He is out constantly checking out the most troubled areas and talking to the people there.
Last night, he was in the Sai Mai area near Khlong Hok Wa where the northern run-off has definitely arrived.
Alongside the flooded roads, he found residents trying to sleep while fighting off mosquitoes. And on the roads, he found groups of men fishing with large nets. The biggest catch of the night weighed a remarkable 50kg.
Today, the Sai Mai area is bracing for even worse flooding as the massive run-off from the North is too forceful to be regulated by the canal system.
The water level in the canal at Khlong 2 sluice gate, which conjoins with Khlong Hok Wa, the last barrier of Bangkok's Sai Mai, reached 2.6 metres yesterday, higher than the maximum height of the gate at 2.4 metres.
Officials had to remove parts of the 50-centimetre high sandbag wall at the gate to allow water to flow into the Khlong Hok Wa canal to relieve the impact on nearby residents.
The increased water level in Khlong Hok Wa since 1am yesterday forced almost all residents of Phahon Yothin Soi 63 to evacuate from their homes which were left to face the one-metre level of water.
Many parts of Sai Mai Road began to be flooded yesterday by water coming from Phahon Yothin Road and sewers in which the water has kept increasing since Tuesday.
Rittiyawannalai 2 school in Sai Mai Soi 43 which served as a sandbagging centre for making a seven-kilometre-long levee by Khlong Hok Wa is now under 30cm of water, forcing city officials, soldiers and volunteers to move out of the area.
